Hajj Ahmad Muhammad Hassan al-Shak'a was born in Nablus and was an influential figure there. Due to pressures exerted on al-Najah School, which began operating in a rented building, he committed himself to constructing a dedicated building for the school. This building was built in record time, attracting the attention and admiration of the city's residents. Al-Najah remained in this building until 1965, and it is now known as Ibn al-Haytham School. He was a member of the National Committee in Nablus, which was formed in April 1936. This was the first national committee established in Palestine, comprised of several political parties and forces, including the Arab Party and the Defense Party, which had waged a long and bloody struggle in Palestine for many years. He became mayor (1950-1952) and president of the Chamber of Commerce and Economic Affairs, which was formed in the city of Nablus in 1944. Its administrative committee consisted of Tawfiq Ahmad Arafat as vice president, Hikmat Al-Masri as honorary secretary, Anwar Arafat as administrative secretary, Hamdi Kanaan as treasurer, and eleven members: Sheikh Amr Arafat, Haj Abdul Fattah Touqan, Hilmi Abdul Hadi, Al-Hadd Rushdi Al-Aloul, Haj Izz Al-Din Kamal, Hassan Haj Nimr Al-Nabulsi, Fathi Al-Nabulsi, Fahmi Agha Al-Nimr, Izzat Al-Khayyat, Saeed Shweika, and Kamal Al-Din Al-Takruri Al-Tamimi.
