Dr. Hassan Shukri al-Khalidi was born in Jerusalem. He studied at the Bishop's School. He enrolled at the Syrian Protestant College in Beirut, which later became the American University. In the year that World War I broke out, he had completed his second year of medical school and was drafted as an officer in the Ottoman army. When the government established the Ottoman Medical School at the Jesuit University in Beirut as a branch of Istanbul University, he was transferred back and graduated as a doctor in 1916. He was sent to the Gaza front and suffered a broken hand, receiving treatment at the military hospital in Jerusalem in 1917.
He was taken prisoner to Egypt and released the following year. After the death of Dr. Nur al-Din al-Kriti in 1919, he succeeded him as director of the National Hospital in Nablus until he was transferred to the position of director of the government hospital in Jaffa in 1931. He remained in this position until the occupation of Jaffa in 1948. He returned to Nablus and opened a clinic where he treated refugees and the poor free of charge. His clinic was full of patients, just as people's memories are full of love, gratitude, appreciation, and recognition for Dr. Hassan Al-Khalidi, who was a school of commitment to the issues of his nation and homeland. In addition to his knowledge and ethics, Dr. Hassan Al-Khalidi was a literary figure who loved poetry, to the point that he memorized the entire Diwan of Al-Mutanabbi. He had articles and seminars in Jaffa and Nablus, and he had connections with a number of leading figures in contemporary Arab poetry.
