Information
José Zahir: A Chilean lawyer of Palestinian origin from the city of Bethlehem, renowned for his work in defending human rights in Chile. He holds honorary doctorates in Law from Notre Dame University–Louaize and the City University of New York. He is a member of the International Commission of Jurists in Geneva and a board member of the International Center for Transitional Justice.
He directed the Human Rights Center at the University of Chile’s School of Law. In 1994, UNESCO awarded him the Human Rights Education Prize, and in 2003 he received Chile’s National Award for Humanities and Social Sciences for his contributions to the protection of individual rights and ethics in politics. He was also appointed as the President of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.
