Information

Riyad al-Anis (1953-2009) is a Palestinian human rights activist and lawyer from Umm al-Fahm . Riyad al-Anis was born on July 12, 1953. He grew up and attended elementary school in Umm al-Fahm and then attended Afula High School, graduating in 1971. He began his academic career in the same year when he enrolled in the Faculty of Law at Tel Aviv University , graduating in 1975. He was appointed as a teaching assistant at the faculty and continued his studies for a second degree. He obtained his law degree in 1977 and then opened his own office in Umm al-Fahm, where he practiced for 32 years. He was active in various political and public organizations, in addition to civil and human rights work.

His political activity

He was prominent in the national student movement during his university studies, where he headed the Arab Students Committee at Tel Aviv University and was one of the founders of the National Union of Arab University Students inside Palestine. He also joined the Sons of the Country Movement . Riyad was elected as a member of the Umm al-Fahm Municipality between 1983 and 1988, representing the Sons of the Country Movement and heading its electoral list. He later joined the National Democratic Assembly Party (Israel) since its founding, where he was a member of the Political Bureau and the Central Committee.

His human rights and public activity

He played a prominent role in the Arab popular movement inside Palestine, where he was a member of the Land Defense Committee and a founding member of the Arab Foundation for Human Rights and the Al-Hadaf Association. He also served as the editor-in-chief of Fasl Al-Maqal newspaper and general supervisor of the Arab 48 website . He was also a prominent lawyer and was active in several national and popular issues, including: defending the martyrs of the Second Palestinian Intifada and making their families' voices heard before the Or Commission , defending the lands of Al-Ruh , defending the hostages of Al-Aqsa Mosque  in Israeli courts, and defending politician Azmi Bishara and the Arab parties before the Israeli judiciary, which sought to cancel their legitimacy.  In addition, during his legal work, Riyad represented thousands of Palestinian prisoners from inside Israel, the West Bank, Jerusalem and Gaza before Israeli courts.

His death

Riyad al-Anis died on April 24, 2009, at the age of 56, after a long career in human rights and public activism inside Palestine.  Hundreds of people from across the country attended his funeral, and a memorial service was held for him, attended by representatives of many associations, parties, and institutions in the country.
