Jamal Al-Muhaisen (also known as Abu Al-Mu'tasim; March 15, 1949 – February 7, 2022) was a prominent Palestinian politician and a member of Fatah's Central Committee, serving as Commissioner of Mobilization and Organization for the Foreign Territories.
Early Life:
Jamal Ahmad Al-Muhaisen was born on March 15, 1949, in the Hebron Mountains during the forced displacement of the residents of Iraq Al-Manshiyya to Hebron. Despite an Egyptian-Israeli agreement allowing their return to their village, after the Egyptian army withdrew, Israel occupied the village on March 27, 1949, preventing their return. Al-Muhaisen subsequently lived in various locations including Hebron, Beit Kahil, Beit Fajjar, Al-Aroub Camp, Aqaba Jaber in Jericho, and later moved to Amman, Jordan in 1960.
Education and Career:
Al-Muhaisen earned a bachelor's degree and a general diploma in education from Beirut Arab University in 1972. He was actively involved in student politics, being elected as a member of the student council in 1969 representing the Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fatah). He obtained a higher diploma in Islamic studies from Al-Fateh University in Tripoli in 1978, and later earned a doctorate in philosophy, specializing in comparative education, from Karlova University in Prague (formerly Czechoslovakia) in 1988.
Recognitions and Contributions:
In recognition of his national role and leadership within the Palestinian revolution, President Mahmoud Abbas awarded Al-Muhaisen the Grand Star of the Order of Jerusalem on February 1, 2022. He was acknowledged for his efforts in defending the rights of his people and his significant contributions to various fields, including union work and advocacy for freedom and independence.
Contributions and Roles:
Al-Muhaisen was deeply involved in Palestinian politics, joining Fatah in 1967. He held various positions within the movement, including responsibilities in organization and membership across different regions. He served in multiple union roles, such as the General Union of Palestinian Teachers and the Council of the Arab Teachers Union, as well as within international teacher federations. He became a member of the Fatah Revolutionary Council and held roles in committees overseeing finances and membership protection.
His Death:
Al-Muhaisen passed away on February 7, 2022, at the age of 72 due to pulmonary fibrosis. He received treatment at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital but remained in critical condition until his death was announced. His contributions to Palestinian politics and society were highly regarded throughout his lifetime.
