On 21 November, 22 newly elected members of the Second UNRWA Student Parliament, representing Palestine refugee girls and boys in the West Bank, Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, met during a workshop in Beirut.
The workshop was held in the wake of the successful elections with the aim of discussing their priorities, goals and action plan for the next twelve months. They also elected a president, vice president, and secretary.
Ahmed Al-Jamal (14 years old) from Rafah, Gaza, was elected to be Speaker of Parliament. After his election, Ahmed said to his colleagues: “We have a great responsibility before us, and we must work together in the interest of all UNRWA students.”
Student Saja Sbeihat (13 years old) from Nablus in the West Bank was elected to the position of Vice President, and Islam Burqan (15 years old) from South Amman in Jordan was elected as Secretary.
Over the past two years, UNRWA has invested a lot of energy into empowering Palestine refugee youth and creating a platform to enhance participation. UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl congratulated the newly elected members by saying: “You have been elected to represent 530,000 students living in difficult environments, and they expect you to carry their voices to us and to the world. I encourage you to do so and ask you to carry out your responsibilities with humility and a deep sense of responsibility.” "
The Student Parliament was first established in 2017, and provides an opportunity for UNRWA students to get to know each other, exchange experiences, and work together to support their communities and defend their rights at the local, regional and global levels. This agency-wide platform builds on school-level student parliaments that have been in place in UNRWA schools since 2001.
