Palestinian Sarah Abu Al-Khair, from Jabalia camp in the northern Gaza Strip, won unanimously as the best Canadian immigrant of the year (2018).
Sarah, who lives in Toronto, was nominated for the Best Canadian Immigrant of the Year award, as she is a pioneer in humanitarian work serving the rights of refugees and immigrants in Canada.
Sarah worked with educational leaders and student unions, and was able to lead efforts to improve the conditions of refugees and immigrants in Canadian higher education institutions.
Abu Al-Khair established the first institution of its kind at Ryerson University in Toronto, to support this segment and provide services, and she also chaired the Union of Continuing Education Students there.
