Born in Jerusalem in 1955; studied Archaeology at Birzeit University from 1975, graduating with a BA in 1980; worked as the Director of the Islamic Museum at Al-Aqsa Mosque, Jerusalem, from 1980-84; continued his studies and received an MA (1987) and a PhD (1991) in Islamic Studies from Tübingen University, Germany; works as Assistant Professor in the Dept. of History at Birzeit University since 1991; also co-director of Riwaq, the Centre for Architectural Conservation, Ramallah, which he joined in 1992; was involved in second-track diplomacy during the Oslo process, mainly with regard to Jerusalem issues; is considered a specialist in the history and architecture of Jerusalem and serves as advisor to the PA regarding the Jerusalem Question; served as Sector Coordinator for the review of the culture and heritage sector that formed part of the EU-funded Multi-Sector Review of East Jerusalem project; played an important role in the Oct. 2003 talks in Jordan that led to the Geneva Initiative later that year; among the signatories of the Geneva Accords in Dec. 2003; Board of Trustees member of a number of organizations and projects in Jerusalem, incl. Yabous Productions; (co-)author of many articles and publications which address the history, archaeology, and cultural heritage of Palestine, incl. History and Architecture (with Khaldoun Bshara, Riwaq, 2002);
