Dr. Saed Khayat is a professor specializing in water resources management and holds the title of full professor at Palestine Technical University - Kadoorie. Dr. Khayat has a strong academic background, having earned a PhD in Hydrochemistry and Isotope Hydrology from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany and a Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences from An-Najah National University in Palestine.
During his distinguished career, Dr. Khayat has made significant contributions to the understanding and management of water resources. His research interests span a wide range of important environmental issues, including climate change and water resources, hydrogeochemistry, isotopes in the water cycle, wastewater treatment and reuse, brackish and slightly brackish water treatment and reuse, groundwater pollution monitoring, surface water modeling, and irrigation water management.
In addition to his research prowess, Dr. Khayat has held several key administrative positions at Palestine Technical University - Kadoorie, including Vice President for International Cooperation, Dean of Planning, Development and Quality, and Chair of the Applied Biotechnology and Sustainable Agriculture Departments. His leadership extends to the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the Palestinian Territories, where he has managed numerous scientific and technical initiatives.
Dr. Khayat’s contributions to academia are evident in his extensive teaching experience, having taught courses in wastewater treatment, air and water pollution, soil chemistry, environmental impact assessment, environmental biotechnology, climate change, and more. He has also supervised numerous master’s theses, directing research on topics as diverse as groundwater pollution, medical waste residues, and sulfate-reducing bacteria.
Dr. Khayat is a prolific researcher, having participated in numerous international projects, often collaborating with prestigious institutions through his receipt of important grants and awards, including a fellowship and the DAAD-Helmholtz Post Doc Award. His projects have ranged from groundwater resource assessment using environmental isotopes to the establishment of early warning systems for groundwater quality.
Dr. Khayat’s scientific contributions include numerous book chapters and journal articles addressing major environmental challenges. His work has been instrumental in advancing the field of hydrology, particularly in the Middle East context, providing valuable insights into water quality, groundwater recharge mechanisms, and the impacts of climate change on water resources.
An active participant in international scientific communities, Dr. Khayat’s expertise and dedication to environmental sustainability continues to drive innovation and development in water resource management and environmental protection.
