Haj Hussam Al-Hijjawi is one of the prominent figures in the economic city of Nablus and a public figure who has won the respect and appreciation of a wide segment of the city’s people. He comes from a well-known, ancient family, and is one of the owners of the famous Al-Hijjawi printing press, which has enriched the national economy for nearly 90 years. He began practicing economic work with his father, the late Abdul Rahman Hijawi, in his own company, Abdul Rahman Hijawi and Sons Company - Al-Nasr Commercial Printing Press and its library in 1960, which was founded in 1935, and was the first and pioneer in its field of printing and stationery in Palestine.
After the departure of the late Abdul Rahman Hijjawi in 1965, he assumed responsibility for economic work.
Abdul Rahman Hijjawi and Sons Company is one of the largest leading companies in Palestine.
He serves as Chairman of the Company's Board of Directors.
In 1992, he was elected a member of the Board of Directors of the Nablus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and was appointed its Secretary.
Mr. Hussam Hijawi held many positions in Palestinian private sector institutions, including President of the Palestinian Banking Corporation, one of the founders and President of the Paper Industries Union (formerly), a founding member of the Palestinian Trade Center (PalTrade), and a member of the Board of Directors of the Palestinian Employment and Social Protection Fund, one of the founders and a member Board of Directors of the General Federation of Palestinian Industries (formerly).
He participated in many workshops on preparing Palestinian economic laws, including the Palestinian Labor Law, the draft industry law, and the draft law of the Palestinian Chambers of Commerce, Industry, and Agriculture. He was one of the first interested in preparing the draft Palestinian Standards and Metrology Law, and one of the pioneers of the idea of establishing the Palestinian Standards and Metrology Institution.
Out of social responsibility, he engaged in work within many institutions, committees and charitable societies, where he served as Secretary of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society for more than 25 years, Secretary of the Solidarity Charitable Society for more than 25 years, one of the founders of the Palestinian Friends of the Blind Society, and one of the founders of the Society of Friends of the Blind. He was honored by the Arab Labor Organization as a pioneer of Arab labor in 2010.
In 2011, he was elected a member of the Chamber’s Board of Directors, and was elected as its Vice President.
Hossam Hijjawi assumed the position of President of the Nablus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, following session No. 754 held by the Chamber’s Board of Directors. This came in implementation of the agreement signed shortly after the elections that took place in the Chamber of Commerce in 2011, as the Council unanimously approved it in the aforementioned session, allowing Hijjawi to assume the position of President, and Omar Hashem the position of Vice President of the Chamber, effective July 21, 2013.
