Students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics at Birzeit University, Wissam Al-Tal, Basil Frejat, and Salim Attari, designed a “robot” that works to rehabilitate the joints of the lower limbs of those suffering from strokes that led to complete or partial paralysis, so that they can walk again on them after several sessions of training.
The idea of designing the “robot” came from the fact that this type of paralysis is most often treated with traditional natural methods based on a specialized person performing manual sessions, but these are often ineffective and expensive, not to mention that they are exhausting for the person undergoing treatment, so the need was... The invention, according to the project supervisor, Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics, Amir Sidr.
Sidr added, "Based on this, the students designed a robot that performs the treatment process instead of the treating person, by moving the joint to be treated according to the appropriate speed and angle for treatment, which is determined by a specialized person (the therapist), as the robot contains a special control interface for the treating person." Through which the appropriate speed and angle at which he must work is entered.
According to Sidr, the robot also has a control interface based on the Labview program that shows the detailed path, which in turn leads to direct monitoring of the treatment progress. The control interface also contains a database of patients to be treated, which includes their names and a description of the medical condition, in addition to the number of sessions that the patient must perform.
After presenting the project to the department’s examiners, Dr. Sameh Abu Awad and Dr. Nidal Farhat and his experience with one of the students. The project designers received feedback to develop it and address some of the gaps in the design and control.
