Sheikh Mahmoud Al-Taher was one of the Azharite scholars of Nablus and a teacher who mentored generations. He was born in Jaffa in 1907. His father, Haj Amin Al-Taher, was a citrus merchant who exported fruits to Europe, and his grandfather, Haj Ahmed, traded in kerosene, which he imported from Batumi in Azerbaijan during the Ottoman era. Sheikh Mahmoud studied at the Frères schools in Jaffa and then enrolled at Al-Azhar University after the death of his mother, who belonged to the well-known Yafi family of Beirut. He returned to Palestine in 1934 to work as a preacher at the Al-Nuzha Mosque and the Great Mosque of Jaffa. Following the 1948 Nakba, he returned to his homeland and was appointed imam and preacher at the Great Salahi Mosque and a teacher of religion and Arabic at Al-Jahiz School until his retirement in 1967. He was known for his upright character, his non-affiliation with political parties, his defense of his homeland, his nationalism, and his religion, and he was also known for his asceticism and gentleness. His heart was hardened, and he wept often out of fear of God. Sheikh Mahmoud was also known for his Azharite turban and his Egyptian accent, which remained with him until his death in 2002, after he had secluded himself in his home for 15 years prior to his passing.
