Information

The Sheikh was born in Nablus, and his family was known as al-Baqani, after Baqat al-Hatab, west of Nablus. He was renowned for his piety, asceticism, and wealth. His diwan (gathering place) was a destination for scholars, students of knowledge, dignitaries, and even the Ottoman governor. His words carried weight and commanded respect. He dedicated his life and efforts to spreading the noble values and virtues that Islam intended for the benefit of humanity in this world and the hereafter. He understood Islam as a message of goodness and a call for justice and tolerance. The Samaritan priests, who were frequent visitors to his diwan, responded to his suggestion to change the color of their turbans from white to red. His lands were vast, extending as far as the Auja region near Jaffa. The camel caravan carrying olives from his estates would create a commotion that attracted attention upon its arrival in Nablus. The Sheikh was accustomed to distributing quantities of oil to his neighbors and friends, including the Sisters of St. Joseph, as an expression of his belief in the rights of neighbors and his vision of peace, tolerance, openness, and cooperation in good deeds and acts of kindness. He has three sons who are scholars: Sheikh Muhammad, Sheikh Yusuf, and Sheikh Adel.
