Information
Ahmad Nawash was born in Jerusalem in 1934. He received his BA in Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in 1964, and six years later, he earned a Diploma in lithography and zinc etching from the School of Fine Arts in Bordeaux, France. Nawash was not content to stop his artistic education there: from 1975 to 1977, he continued his study of lithography and etching at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris, and then went onto Florence, Italy to study the restoration of oil paintings and ceramics. Nawash's first solo exhibition took place just after graduation in Rome in 1964, and in the nearly fifty years since, his work has shown as far and wide as Amman, Jerusalem, Damascus, Baghdad, Cairo, Asila, Paris, Cologne, Taipei, and Sharjah. The artist has participated in the 5th Sharjah Biennale in 2001, and in 2008, his work was the subject of a solo retrospective curated by Darat al Funun, one of Jordan's most renowned contemporary art spaces. A founding member of the Jordanian Plastic Artists Association, he has also served as an instructor of Painting and Art History at the University of Jordan, and of Art Education at Yarmouk University. Nawash's work is featured in the private collections of the National Gallery of Fine Arts of Jordan, the Royal Palaces in Amman, the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, as well as foundations and individuals in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, the Arab Gulf, Europe, and the United States. The artist lives and works in Amman.
