Amani Al-Khatahtbeh is an American author and technology pioneer. She is the founder and editor-in-chief of muslimgirl.com, an online magazine for Muslim women. She became the first hijab-wearing Muslim woman to be on the Forbes 30 Under 30 in Media, making MuslimGirl the first Muslim company to be named to the list. CNN named her one of the 25 most influential Muslim Americans by age 25.

 

early years

Amani grew up in New Jersey. Her family moved temporarily to Jordan in 2005 to escape Islamophobia. MuslimGirl was founded in 2009 when she was 17 years old and a senior in high school. With friends from her mosque, Al-Khatahtbeh posted blogs on the site. After high school, she attended Rutgers University, graduating in 2014. She then worked for a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit before moving to New York and working briefly for a major media organization.

 

MuslimGirl

At the beginning of 2015, MuslimGirl was developed by volunteer staff and saw a significant increase in its readership. The site's traffic grew by 90% and it recorded 100 million hits that year.

 

After the shooting of Luke McDonald, Al-Khatahtbeh did live coverage of some of the protests in Chicago. She delivered a sermon at the Women's Mosque of America in Los Angeles. Her sermon centered on the "hole" metaphor from The Dark Knight Rises. She compared the hole to the experience of American Muslims after 9/11.

 

Amani Al-Khattaba rang the opening bell for the Nasdaq Stock Exchange on January 25, 2016.

 

In 2016, she partnered with Teen Vogue on a web series looking at issues of concern to young Muslim women. In 2018, Amani Al-Khatahtbeh appeared in the music video for the American pop group, Maroon 5, “Girls Like You” with Cardi B, which includes a variety of celebrities, activists, and athletes, including Ellen DeGeneres, Jennifer Lopez, and Ashley Graham, and Amani was alongside Ilhan Omar is the first Somali-American to win a seat in the Minnesota State House of Representatives, the only two Muslim women to appear in the music video.

Al-Khatahtbeh was on the 3-event Brisbane Book Festival program in 2017 which is taking place in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Her book, MuslimGirl: A Coming of Age, was released in October 2016.
