Maryam Barghouti is a Palestinian-American writer, blogger, researcher, activist, commentator and journalist, hailing from Ramallah. Maryam worked as a journalist and reporter specializing in issues related to the Levant, and published many social and political reports from Palestine.
Maryam Al-Barghouti received her BA in English Language and English Literature from Birzeit University. In April 2014, 20-year-old Maryam, at the time, was arrested while participating in a peaceful march against the policies of the Israeli occupation in the village of Nabi Saleh, near Ramallah, and transferred to the Jalameh investigation center. She was then released. Barghouti holds a master's degree in Sociology and Global Change from the University of Edinburgh.
Barghouti has undertaken monitoring and evaluation missions for humanitarian and development aid in countries such as Palestine, Jordan, and Lebanon for various governmental and non-governmental organizations.
Her political commentary and research work appears particularly in Al Jazeera English, The Guardian, BBC, Huffington Post, New York Times, Middle East Monitor, Newsweek, Mundwigs, International Business Times and TRT Worldwide.
Barghouti is also a prominent activist in defending the rights of the Palestinian people through fiction and stories, and her activism has raised global awareness of the harsh realities and experiences faced by Palestinians under Israeli control. During the 2021 Israeli-Palestinian clashes, she often expressed her concerns about Israel's repressive attitude toward Palestine through her civic activism. Mariam Al-Barghouti believes that there was a turning point with the outbreak of violence in some cities that were presented for years as a model of coexistence: “We saw that violence is not limited to the West Bank and the Gaza Strip,” explaining that it “is also present in Tel Aviv, Lydda and Jaffa with those who shout ‘Death’ for the Arabs” and attacking the Palestinians with weapons.
In May 2021, Twitter imposed restrictions on Maryam's official Twitter account, which was covering protests in the West Bank during the 2021 Israeli-Palestinian clashes, and during the temporary restriction, each tweet from the journalist was replaced with the following message "Maryam Barghouti's account is temporarily unavailable because it violates media policy Twitter". Barghouti said Twitter asked her to delete some of her tweets. The company later said that the account restriction was due to an error. Barghouti considered that the issue is not about suspending her account, "but rather about imposing general control over Palestinian accounts, especially in the past few weeks while trying to document Israeli attacks on the ground."
