Biography
He worked in Gaza as a government teacher and later as an editor for the newspaper Akhbar Falastin (Palestine News). In 1966, he joined the Palestine Liberation Army, but the 1967 war prevented him from completing his training and receiving weapons. He was expelled from Gaza after the Israeli army entered it. He spent a year in a refugee camp in Amman before going to Saudi Arabia, where he worked odd jobs to support his large family. In 1974, he became self-employed, which allowed him to travel the world until he and his family settled in Melbourne, Australia, in 1981. He wrote his first novel at the age of forty, "Searching for the Antidote in the Land of Waq Waq," which contains elements of autobiography. His novel "The Phoenix" won the Gibran International Prize, and the Australian Department of Culture adopted its translation into English, which was published in Melbourne. His works have been published in both Arabic and English.
