Salim Arafat Ibrahim Al-Mubayyid was born in the Shuja'iyya neighborhood of Gaza City on June 1, 1943.
He studied the primary stage at Al-Shuja’iya School, and the secondary stage at Palestine and Jaffa Schools. He obtained his high school diploma from Jaffa High School in 1961, and received a bachelor’s degree in geography from Ain Shams University in Egypt in 1965, and a postgraduate diploma from the same university in 1966.
He worked as a teacher at Jaffa High School between (1965-1976), and moved to teach at the Teachers' Training College in Gaza in 1976. He was the principal of Al-Karmel High School between (1977-1980), then became an inspector of social studies subjects in the Directorate of Education in Gaza between (1980-1994), and worked as a part-time lecturer at the Islamic University in Gaza between (1990-1995).
He established the first sea scout team in Gaza in 1965 after receiving the Wood Badge of Scouts from the League of Arab States. He participated in the establishment of the Supreme Council of Palestinian Folklorists in 1977, became a member of the Board of Directors of the Blood Bank in 1979, and also established the Palestinian National Library Authority, and was appointed its Secretary-General in 1994. He established the Palestinian Planning Center and the Center for Historical Research in 1995, and was a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Palestine in Gaza between (2008-2017).
Al-Mubayyid began publishing articles in Palestinian newspapers, including the Gaza-based Akhbar Falastin newspaper. He wrote several historical and geographical studies and research papers, and published twenty-two books, including: Folklore Geography and Palestinian Proverbs (1986), Gaza and its Strip: A Study in the Immortality of Place and the Civilization of its Inhabitants (1987), Palestinian Arab Currency and Foreign Civil Mint: From the Sixth Century BC to 1946 AD (1989), Features of the Palestinian Personality in its Proverbs (1991), The Harvest in Palestinian Folk Heritage (1991), Camels in Palestinian Folk Heritage (1993), Islamic Archaeological Buildings in Gaza and its Strip (1995), Christianity and its Effects in and around Gaza (1998), Palestinian Currency - 1927-1946 with a Brief Historical Study of Minting in Palestinian Cities Throughout the Ages (1999), The Waqf of Musa Pasha Al-Radwan (2000), and Hilmi Misbah Abu Shaaban: The Literary Poet and Revolutionary Journalist (2004), Translation of the Life of Saint Deferius, Bishop of Gaza (395-420 AD) (2004), Al-Muntar: The Self-Cultural Nature and Struggle of the Inhabitants (2005), Agriculture in Palestinian Folk Heritage (2005), Said Ali Zein El-Din: The Revolutionary Lawyer, Educator, and Poet (1894-1959) (2011), The Diaries of the Mujahid Abdul Rahman Muhammad Al-Farra, Mayor of Khan Yunis (1936-1962) (4 parts, 2012), The Library of the Great Omari Mosque in Gaza City: An Introduction to its Establishment, Some of its History, Manuscripts, and the Efforts of the Gaza Historian Othman Al-Tabbaa in its Restoration (co-authored, 2013), Ismail Ashour: The Visual Artist and Cartoonist (2016), Hamdi Abdul Rahman Al-Husseini: A Biography of the National Fighter and Journalist (1899-1988) (2019), My Collection of Gaza Coins from the Fifth Century BC (2019), and The Manuscript of Scientific Chains of Transmission And the missions of the Sufi masters’ methods of Sheikh of Sufi Sheikhs Ahmed Bsisu “1824-1911” (2022), and Sheikh Ahmed Mohi El-Din Al-Husseini and the story of the construction of the Sayyid Hashim Mosque - the biography of a Mufti, fighter and poet of construction “1808-1878”.
Al-Mubayyid died in Gaza on November 28, 2024.
