Faik Aways is an American artist and researcher of Palestinian origin from the town of Deir Dibwan, Ramallah District. He is a specialist in localization and currently serves as the Director of Localization and Language Services for Google in the Middle East, Africa, and Emerging Markets, where he works on supporting and developing localized versions of Google’s products and services.
Faik played a key role in localizing Gmail, YouTube, Chrome, Android, and Google+, with the Arabic versions launched simultaneously with the English ones. He has also worked as a localization consultant for several major Internet companies in Silicon Valley, California.
He holds a Ph.D. in Arabic and Islamic Studies and previously taught Arabic language and culture at Santa Clara University in California.
As an artist, Aways designs artworks centered on Arabic calligraphy, which serves as the primary element in his paintings. He has held numerous exhibitions across the United States and published a unique volume titled “Encyclopedia of Arab American Artists,” which received an Honorable Mention Award from the Arab American National Museum.
Additionally, he designed the entrance and dome of the Arab American National Museum in Michigan, as well as a mural honoring the Arab-American intellectual Edward Said at San Francisco State University.
