Fathi Ismail Ismail Abu Ghaben (1946-2024) is a Palestinian visual artist and sculptor, born in Harbia in the Gaza Strip and lives in Jabalia camp . He learned art by practicing. He participated in many Palestinian, Arab and international exhibitions. He has been a professional artist since 1965, where he makes statues from colored clay and draws with charcoal or pencil. Fathi Ghaben worked as a teacher at Al-Nasr Islamic Model School in Gaza , and then as an advisor to the Palestinian Ministry of Culture . Some call him ( the Van Gogh of Gaza ).
He died on the morning of February 25, 2024, after a long struggle with illness.
His career
He began his artistic career by creating oil paintings that highlighted the beauty of nature, in addition to heritage paintings. He then began to move toward a more purposeful approach, expressing his daily life and the suffering of his people under occupation.
He received the Hiroshima Medal, the World Federation of Associations Medal in Tokyo , and the title of (Artist of Palestine) for the year 1993. He also received the (Sword of Canaan Medal) from the (Palestinian National and Political Guidance Administration) and the Culture, Science and Arts Medal from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas . He was honored by the representative of the European Union after receiving the Palestinian Press House Appreciation Award for the year 2023. He held ten personal exhibitions, and he is one of the founders of the (Association of Fine Artists - Gaza Strip ) and the Association of Palestinian Fine Artists in the West Bank and Gaza Strip .
