Mamoun Al-Shaib (1960-) is a Palestinian visual artist from Tira Haifa . He was born in Yarmouk Camp in Damascus . He studied middle and high school at Al-Karmel School in Yarmouk, then completed his studies at the University of Damascus , Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Oil Painting in 1984. He holds a diploma in education from UNESCO . He won the Best Artwork Award from UNRWA in Damascus in 1995.
His life
His family was displaced from Tira Haifa following the Nakba events in 1948, and settled in Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus. He worked as an art teacher in Palestinian refugee camps and as an art teacher in UNRWA schools for 25 years. He was a member of the Union of Palestinian, Syrian and Arab Fine Artists, then immigrated to the city of Helsingborg in Sweden in 2013 due to the war in Syria . After learning about contemporary art and the culture of visual art in Sweden , his artistic vision changed due to the difference in the target audience, so he began to shed light on the suffering of Palestinian children and women under the yoke of the Israeli occupation. He also faced difficulty in coexisting there, but he wanted to prove to the world that wherever the Palestinian travels, he creates his own future with his own hands.
His artistic style
His works were distinguished by their realistic and documentary style. He shed light on many Palestinian and Syrian issues, and focused in his paintings on documenting the daily suffering of the Palestinian people inside and outside the homeland, from displacement, asylum and captivity, as his paintings record a historical and documentary document. He also paid great attention to showing the suffering of Palestinian women and children . He also painted the Palestinian village , houses and Damascene neighborhoods in a realistic style, influenced by the reality of the daily images broadcast by the media .
His works
Mamoun devoted his art to the cause of his country and people, holding many individual and group exhibitions and receiving awards and honors in Arab and European capitals. Among his most important exhibitions are:
His first exhibition (him) was held at Yarmouk High School in 1977, before he entered the College of Fine Arts.
Exhibition in Malo in 2017.
An exhibition in Copenhagen , Denmark, in 2018, included many paintings that embody Palestinian heritage, dress, and culture, as part of a cultural evening organized by the “Candle of Hope” Association.
Exhibition in Stockholm in 2018.
Exhibition in Berlin in 2019.
An exhibition on Regensgatan in Landskrona in 2020, where he displayed his paintings to Swedish passersby and members of immigrant communities.
An exhibition on the occasion of the thirty-ninth anniversary of Land Day in the city of Helsingborg, Sweden, in 2023, included many paintings, amounting to twenty oil works, and focused in his work on reflecting the suffering of the Palestinian people at home and in the diaspora.
