Majd Kayyal (1990-) is a Palestinian writer, author and journalist born in the city of Haifa in the Palestinian interior . He won the Abdul Mohsen Al-Qattan Award for Young Writer in 2016 and has two literary works and many research papers and articles.
His personal life
Majd Kayyal was born in Haifa to a family displaced from the village of al-Birwa . Kayyal holds a BA in Philosophy and Political Science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . In 2011, he traveled on the Canadian ship Tahrir and another ship called Hurriya, an Irish ship , as part of the Freedom Waves flotilla that aimed to break the siege on the Gaza Strip . However, the Israeli naval forces intercepted the flotilla and prevented it from sailing to the Gaza Strip and arrested those on board, including activist Majd Kayyal. In 2014, at the invitation of the newspaper As-Safir, Majd Kayyal traveled to Beirut to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the founding of the newspaper. Upon his return to the country, Israeli security forces arrested him and took him in handcuffs to his family’s home in Haifa, then threw him into a cell for six days, during which he was interrogated before being transferred to house arrest with restrictions including a ban on travel outside the country. He is an active member of the Palestinian Policy Network .
His professional and literary career
Majd Kayyal writes for many Palestinian and Arab websites such as: As-Safir, Metras , Arabs 48, Fasah, and Qadita, in the field of politics and cultural criticism. Kayyal wrote his first book, The Tragedy of Mr. Matar (2016), which is 112 pages long and was published by Dar Al-Ahliyya, Amman. The novel follows the genre of the nightmare novel and is also diverse in style, discussing a historical reality in a philosophical, religious, and Gnostic language. The writer won the Abdul Mohsen Al-Qattan Award for Young Writer for the year 2015 for this novel. In the world of children, Majd wrote a collection of poems for children, sung by Raneen Hanna and composed by Faraj Suleiman . He also wrote poetry specifically in the Palestinian dialect for a singing album sung and released by Faraj Suleiman . In 2019, Kayyal published his novel Death in Haifa from Dar Al-Ahlia.
The novel is 176 pages long, medium-sized, and the cover was designed by the artist Zuhair Abu Shaib . The images of death in the novel vary from criminal death, death from love, and monotonous death, presented in an imaginative and sometimes theatrical way. Stories in General Sadness is a collection of stories written by Majd Kayyal, directed by Kholoud Basil, and performed on the stage of Khashab Theater in Haifa. It is about that sadness in which feelings of regret, sorrow, loss of hope, and lack of self-esteem are intertwined, which every human being faces.
