Abdul Rahman Shihab ( Abu Ahmed ; July 12, 1968 - October 12, 2023) is a Palestinian writer and political analyst , born and raised in the Gaza Strip . He specializes in Zionist affairs and founded the Atlas Center for Research and Studies in 2012.
He was assassinated along with his wife, three children, mother, and 38 other members of his family on October 12, 2023, during an Israeli airstrike on his home in Jabalia, north of Gaza City , during the Israeli response to Operation Flood of Al-Aqsa .
His biography
Abdul Rahman Rabie Shihab was born in Jabalia , north of the Gaza Strip. He studied primary school at Jabalia Al-Balad School for Boys, and obtained his high school diploma in the science branch inside the occupation prisons in 1997. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in political science from Tel Aviv Open University in 2006, and a master’s degree in political science from the same university in 2007. He has worked as director of the Atlas Center for Research and Studies since 2012.
He joined the Islamic Jihad Movement in 1986, and was one of its cadres in the first Intifada . He was the movement’s general emir in the occupation prisons for more than one organizational cycle. It is believed that the Palestinians tried to exploit the Oslo Accords in order to stabilize the Palestinian political system and preserve the Palestinian cause from extinction.
He was arrested on December 16, 1988 and sentenced to thirty-five years in prison. He was released in the Wafa al-Ahrar prisoner exchange deal in 2011. The occupation forces also closed his family’s home and obstructed him from completing his education in its prisons more than once by repeatedly moving him between prisons , and preventing him from receiving some books , even though they were university books prescribed by an Israeli university.
His research
Shehab published a number of research papers, studies and reports, including:
Dr. Fathi Al-Shaqaqi’s vision of modern state management (2013).
Turkish-Israeli relations in the Israeli mind, and the militarization of the Israeli national decision (2015).
Ashura between the Hebrew and Islamic calendars (2016).
He also published a number of articles, and his center translated a number of books and studies published in Hebrew, including:
The Rising Cliff: Implications and Lessons (2015).
Media-directed wars (2018).
The Bounce Arrow (2020).
His political vision
Shehab believes that the possibilities of overcoming the division between Hamas and Fatah are non-existent, while the relationship between Hamas and Islamic Jihad is stable and based on understanding, and the relations between Islamic and secular movements are also very good. He believes that the Palestinians have the right to use all methods of resistance, but armed resistance is expensive, so armed resistance must be combined with political and media resistance.
He believes that the Palestinian issue is linked to the future of the Islamic world and the unity of the Islamic nation, especially since the occupation entity's primary goal is to divide Arabs and Muslims , and victory will be achieved when the conflict returns to an Arab-Islamic conflict against the Zionist entity . He believes that the occupation's approval of the two-state solution is temporary as it seeks to annex more lands and Judaize them to achieve Greater Israel, and it has become difficult to achieve the goal of establishing a Palestinian state on the borders of June 4, while the one-state solution is only proposed by those who are desperate for the idea of a two-state solution .
