The interdisciplinary artistic practice of Saudi-Palestinian artist Ayman Yusri Dedban revolves around examining national narratives with a critical eye. “The Guardian” is the meaning of his last name, “Didban,” and this is evident in Yousry’s adoption of the concept of the watchful eye associated with the character of the Guardian in his careful analysis of identity, existence, and belonging in terms of their connection to cultural heritage, national integration, and the effects of the complex mutual relationship between East and West. The artist is particularly interested in the tensions arising from the intersection of translation and interdependence, where issues of assimilation and divergent customs emerge. His paintings, photographs and prints explore issues of identity and alienation, often through combinations of text and cinematic images.
Ayman Yousry Dedban’s recent exhibitions include “Tracing Stones” at the Diriyah Biennial in Riyadh in 2021, “Time Image: An Overview of Video Art in Saudi Arabia” at Athar in Jeddah in 2020, “Towards the East” at the Cairo Biennale in 2019, and “10th Place: Contemporary Saudi Art” at the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, Michigan in 2017, his solo exhibition “Give Me the Light” at Athar in Jeddah in 2016, and the “Common Land” exhibition at Sabrina Amrani in Madrid in 2014.
