Title and abstract of the doctoral thesis (within 150 words)
The Effect of School Environment on The Health Behaviors of Jordanian Adolescents in Amman City
Little information exists about Jordanian adolescent health-related behaviors and the factors that affect them. Healthy or risky behaviors developed during adolescence have long lasting effects into adulthood. This study was conducted to examine the effect of the psychosocial aspect of school environment, including peers and teachers, on adolescent health behaviors; and to assess the occurrence of selected health behaviors among adolescent school students in Amman. A cross-sectional descriptive correlational design was used to draw a sample of in-school adolescents aged between 11 to 15 years. The final sample included adolescents from five public and two private schools in Amman. Study participants filled a translated version of 1997/98 HSBC questionnaire. The study revealed that negative perception of school environment and lower perception of peer support was associated with unhealthy tooth brushing behavior. Lower perception of teacher support at school was associated with unhealthy physical activity and tooth brushing behaviors. Seat belt use had the highest frequency among the unhealthy behaviors (85.8%) while tooth brushing behavior had the lowest frequency (46.9%).
