Awni Ahmad Abd al-Rahman al-Khatib (Abu Khaldoun; February 24, 1950 – October 26, 2020) was a Palestinian academic who held several positions, including President of Hebron University in 2009, and President of Palestine Ahliya University in Bethlehem from 2015 until his death.
His life
Awni al-Khatib was born in 1950 in the town of Kafr Thulth , east of Qalqilya . His father was Ahmad Abd al-Rahman al-Khatib and his mother was Maryam Mustafa Othman al-Yassin. He later moved to live in the city of Hebron . He received his Bachelor of Science in Pre-Medical Sciences (Chemistry and Biology) in 1978 from the University of Utah , and his Master of Science from the same university in 1980, where he worked as a teaching assistant from 1978 to 1981. He then received his PhD in Inorganic Chemistry in 1985 from the University of Florida , where he worked as a teaching assistant from 1981 to 1985. He was a visiting scholar at the University of Oklahoma from 1988 to 1989, becoming an associate professor in 1995. He was also a visiting scholar at the University of California from 2007 to 2008, and was promoted to full professor in 2010.
Awni had worked at Hebron University since 1986, serving as Dean of the Faculty of Science from 1987 to 1995, Vice President for four years, and President of Hebron University from 2009 to 2012. In 2015, he became President of Palestine Ahliya University in Bethlehem , a position he held until his death. He was a member of the Palestinian Council for Higher Education and the National Commission for Accreditation and Quality Assurance in Higher Education. He also received awards for leadership and scientific research, and has published more than thirty research papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
His death
He died on October 26, 2020 AD , corresponding to Rabi' al-Awwal 9, 1442 AH , at the age of 70, after a two-year battle with cancer . His funeral procession took place at the Uthman ibn Affan Mosque near Karantina in the city of Hebron, and he was buried in the Karantina cemetery. A number of Palestinian media agencies, personalities, universities, and schools mourned him.
