Yahya Rushdi Ali Al-Sarraj (born February 24, 1962 in Gaza ) is a university professor and the mayor of Gaza . He is married and has seven children.
His life
He completed his primary and secondary education at Imam Al-Shafi’i, Al-Zeitoun and Palestine schools in Gaza, then moved to Nablus to complete his bachelor’s degree from An-Najah National University , and obtained a master’s degree from the University of Leeds in Britain , and a doctorate from the University of Bradford in 1995, until he became an associate professor of road and transportation engineering .
His professional life
Al-Sarraj held several academic positions in the Gaza Strip , including:
(2003-2012) President of the University College of Applied Sciences in Gaza.
(2010-2011) Vice President of the Islamic University of Gaza .
(2010-2011) Head of the Civil Engineering Department at the Islamic University of Gaza.
(2010-2011) Consultant in project management , institutional evaluation , traffic engineering , environmental studies , and infrastructure .
(2014) He held the position of Vice President of Foreign Affairs at the Islamic University of Gaza .
(2019) He is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University College of Applied Sciences in Gaza, and served on a joint committee that addresses financial issues in Gaza universities.
(2019) Mayor of Gaza City.
(2021) Contributed to the launch of the “We Will Rebuild It” campaign to repair the damage caused by the war .
Consultant on several projects with local and international institutions including the World Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, the German Cooperation, the French Development Foundation and Save the Children.
He served as a member of many professional and public institutions, such as:
Member of the National Accord and Reconciliation Committee .
Member of the Popular Committee to Confront the Siege .
Member of the advisory board of a number of international and civil institutions.
Founding member of Natuf Association for Environment and Community Development.
Member of the Palestinian Engineers Syndicate in the Gaza Strip.
Member of the Board of Directors of the Gaza Branch of the Engineers Syndicate (1998–2007).
He was listed in the Who's Who International Society in 2002.
Founder of a website specialized in statistics and studies on roads and transportation in Palestine.
His interests
Dr. Yahya has many interests, especially in encouraging interest in the rights of vulnerable and marginalized groups, and respecting human rights . He also has several contributions in encouraging the development of education as one of the most important human rights and as one of the basic means of developing and advancing society , and changing the stereotypical view of women and some groups in society, most importantly people with disabilities .
Elites and societal segments in Gaza City agreed to choose Al-Sarraj to assume the position of mayor of Gaza, during the "Open House" meeting in 2019. During the handover ceremony of the municipal council, he announced his new policy in work and the objectives of the municipal council, which are represented in 4 main axes: arranging the internal house, activating and developing the municipality's cultural centers, facilitating procedures for citizens, and investing and developing the municipality's properties.
