Helga Tawil-Souri ( born 1969 , Kuwait ) is a Palestinian-American media scholar and documentary filmmaker  She is an associate professor in the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at New York University . She earned a BA from McGill University in 1992, an MA from the University of Southern California Annenberg School of Communication in 1994, and a PhD from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Colorado Boulder in 2005. 

Helga began filming her first film in November 2001, titled Not Going There, Don't Belong Here , which was shot in various refugee camps in Lebanon and was completed in 2002. The film was broadcast on several American channels, including Free Speech TV, and was screened at universities and film festivals in the United States and abroad. 

Helga also filmed a film titled "Twenty-four hours in Jabaa", which was filmed in the village of Jabaa in the Palestinian West Bank . She finished the film in 2004, making it an experimental documentary that links the sounds and images of war and violence with traditional culture. It was filmed during the Second Intifada . 

Helga's research has focused on the Americanization of the Palestinian territories through the development of the Internet,  and her research  has been used in a symposium on information society and multiculturalism at a university in South Korea ,  and in a chapter of her books  she has mentioned some of the traditional theoretical assumptions that are considered challenging in discussing global communications,  and has said that addressing controversial issues is a matter for debate in the media.
