Khairiya Rasas, Vice President of An-Najah National University for
International and Foreign Relations, won the majority of votes in the elections
for the presidency of the Union of Euro-Mediterranean Universities UNIMED,
which was held in the Spanish city of Granada, to become the first woman to
hold this high position since the establishment of this union nearly three
decades ago. These elections were held during the annual conference of the
General Assembly of the Union of Euro-Mediterranean Universities hosted by the
University of Granada in the presence of a wide network of university
presidents, academics and representatives of partner organizations.

Rassas expressed her pride in this vote, which involves many challenges and
opportunities, stressing that during her three-year term (2023-2026), she will
work hard to coordinate, activate and unify efforts between the universities of
the Union to bridge the gap between the two shores of the Mediterranean and to
enhance the strength and steadfastness of higher education institutions.
Especially in the post-pandemic era, and in line with the requirements of the
Fifth Industrial Revolution. She said, "We need more universities to join
UNIMED, to hold more partnerships, mobility programs and international academic
exchange to enrich openness and understanding of social and cultural diversity
and to enhance our collective ability to face any current or future

Khairiya Rasas has a lot of diverse experiences that were concentrated in two
important and interrelated tracks, in the government, where she assumed the
position of advisor to the former Prime Minister, Dr. Rami Hamdallah, and in
various roles as a specialist in eye care in a number of clinics and hospitals,
and at An-Najah National University as an academic, dean, and vice president
for international relations. She established the first college of optometry in
Palestine, in addition to establishing the only global health institute in

international awards from two of the world's most important leaders. In 2005,
she received an award from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, in recognition of
her role in establishing the eye health program in Palestine, and in 2021, she

presidential decision from French President Emmanuel Macron, which is the
highest rank awarded to French and international personalities. For its

noteworthy that the Union of Euro-Mediterranean Universities UNIMED, which was
