Wael Hamdan Ibrahim Al-Dahdouh was born in the Al-Zeitoun neighborhood, southeast of Gaza City, on April 30, 1970. He is married and has eight children. He completed his primary education at UNRWA schools, graduating from high school in 1988. He earned a BA in Journalism and Media from the Islamic University in Gaza City in 1998, and a MA in Regional Studies from Al-Quds University in Abu Dis in 2007.
He worked as a correspondent for several newspapers and magazines in Palestine, including Al-Quds newspaper in 1998. He then joined Al-Arabiya TV in 2003, then moved to Al-Jazeera TV in 2004, where he worked as a field correspondent and later became its bureau chief in the Gaza Strip. Al-Dahdouh covered pivotal events in the Gaza Strip, including waves of Israeli military escalation against the Strip, assassinations carried out by the occupation against political and military leaders of resistance factions, the 2006 legislative elections, the 2007 division events, and all of the occupation's wars on the Strip since late 2008. His field reports conveyed the suffering of the Palestinians, especially the horrific massacres committed by the occupation against civilians and the devastating effects of Israeli bombing on the infrastructure.
His media coverage was characterized by accuracy, professionalism, and objectivity. He displayed the highest degree of courage despite the dangers that almost cost him his life, as he moved between targeted areas to convey the suffering of the people during the brutal occupation war on the Gaza Strip, which erupted following Operation Flood of Al-Aqsa on October 7, 2023. He provided detailed field reports supported by live testimonies and direct observations, making them a reliable source for conveying the facts to the world. He also prepared documentaries and journalistic investigations, and became a distinguished model for journalists due to his determination to continue his work in conveying the events of the war despite the personal tragedy that befell him as a result of the Israeli bombing.
Al-Dahdouh has won several international awards in recognition of his media efforts, most notably the Peace Through Media Award/London in 2013. He was honored by a number of Arab leaders at numerous international festivals and conferences, and won a number of Arab and international awards during the occupation war on Gaza in 2023, including the Aubuchon International Press Freedom Award /Spain, the National Press Club Award in the United States of America, and the Reporters Without Borders Award. Arab and international newspapers and magazines considered him the Person of the Year during the years (2023-2024) in recognition of his efforts and sacrifices in conveying news of the war to the world.
Al-Dahdouh suffered under the occupation. He was arrested for seven years after completing high school, and was banned from traveling for many years. His wife, son, daughter, infant grandson, and twelve of his nephews and relatives were killed in an Israeli airstrike on the Nuseirat refugee camp, southwest of Gaza City, on October 25, 2023. He was also wounded in an Israeli drone attack in Khan Yunis on December 15, 2023, while attempting to cover the Israeli bombing of a school. This attack also killed Al Jazeera cameraman Samer Abu Daqqa and three civil defense paramedics who were with him. Al-Dahdouh's injury resulted in significant damage to his right arm. His eldest son, Hamza, who worked with him at Al Jazeera, was also killed in an Israeli airstrike on the car he was in with a fellow journalist in the Al-Mawasi area, southwest of the Gaza Strip, on January 7, 2024.
