Shawqi Khatib (born in 1956) is an entrepreneur, economic advisor, construction and planning specialist, and a former Palestinian politician from Yafa Nazareth in the Nazareth District.
He previously vacated the position of Chairman of the Jaffa Council of Nazareth, and previously headed the Higher Follow-up Committee for the Arabs in Israel.
He is an architect. He began his political career in 1988 when he reached the age of 32 after being chosen to represent the Israeli Communist Party in the local elections to head the Jaffa Council of Nazareth. He won several electoral rounds and headed the Jaffa Council of Nazareth for 20 consecutive years, until the local elections in Israel in 2008.
In 2001, he was appointed Chairman of the Higher Follow-up Committee for the Arabs in Israel, and was appointed Chairman of the Arab Local Authorities Committee. This position was vacant for seven years, until 2008. At the end of his term as chairman of the committee, he announced his resignation from political life.
Shawki Khatib suggested increasing the number of members of the Higher Follow-up Committee by increasing the number of party members in the committee to achieve equal representation between women and men in the committee. This proposal led to a dispute in the committee and also to a lot of criticism against it by the Vice President of the Northern Islamic Movement Kamal Khatib and other parties who said that the role of women is completed in the kitchen and not in the committee. This debate took place in 2008 before announcing his resignation from political life.
During his tenure as head of the Follow-up Committee, Shawki Khatib contributed to the drafting of the future vision document for the Arab citizens of Israel. In the 18th Knesset elections, he was given a symbolic position (No. 115) on the Democratic Front for Peace and Equality candidate list.
After his resignation from politics, Shawki began working on developing economic projects for the Palestinian community inside Israel. In recent years, Shawki Khatib served as the Executive Director of the Industrial Park in Nazareth, a project of the entrepreneur Steve Wertheimer group. Shawky Khatib is the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Al-Fanar Company. He is among the initiators of the establishment of the Arab Center "Injaz", a center that works to develop the performance of the Arab local authorities in Israel.
