Jorge Briz Abularach was born in Guatemala from a Palestinian descent, Lawyer and Notary, Businessman, and Member Founder, President of the Board of Directors of many companies. Active participant, as in national and international business associations and entities involved in communitarian work and public service. Business leader throughout his career, has held as President of the Chamber of Commerce of Guatemala, in several periods, Director of the National Exports Council (In Spanish, Consejo Nacional para las Exportaciones – CONAPEX), Director and President of the Central American Chamber of Commerce Federation (In Spanish, Federación de Cámaras de Comercio del Istmo Centroamericano (FECAMCO). Likewise, he was President of the Coordinating Committee of Agricultural, Trade, Industry and Financial Associations (In Spanish, Comité Coordinador de Asociaciones Agrícolas, Comerciales, Industriales y Financieras – CACIF-) Director of the Hemispheric Congress of the Chambers of Commerce of Latin America, President of the Permanent Secretary of Chambers of Commerce and Industries of Latin America ( In Spanish, Secretaría Permanente de Cámaras de Comercio e Industrias Latinas – CAMACOL-) and Vice-president of the Permanent Committee of Expositions ( In Spanish, Comité Permantente de Exposiciones – COPEREX-)
During his career he has been a member of the Monetary Board of the Bank of Guatemala, responsible by law of establishing the monetary policy in Guatemala. In that matter, he participated in financial negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank.
He was one of the subscribers of the final text of the Peace Accords, as a member of the National Commission appointed by the Government, being elected President of the Private Sector Delegation in the Peace Talks held in Ottawa, Canada, with the Commanders of the Unidad Revolucionaria Nacional Guatemalteca (URNG) during the early stages of the process.
He participated in negotiations with the European Commission and European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium, whose main objective was to ensure that the international community would finance programs and projects that would allow Guatemala to be able to fulfill the commitments of the Peace Accords.

He was named Foreign Minister of Guatemala (January 7, 2004). He held the office until July 31, 2006. As foreign minister developed the formulations of policies and the application of the legal/juridical system related to the State of Guatemala with other States and persons or Juridical International Institutions.

He led the Political Party Reform Movement (Guatemala), consolidated in the General Elections that took place in Guatemala on November 9, 2003 and December 28, 2003, such as one of the political parties that integrated the “Gran Alianza Nacional – GANA-“, that won the General Elections 2003, with the election of Oscar Berger Perdomo as President of the Republic of Guatemala.
The National Assembly of the Coalition Gran Alianza Nacional (GANA) proclaimed Jorge Briz, candidate to the Mayoralty of Guatemala City (August 2003), obtaining in the General Elections of November 9, 2003 the second place of the popular vote, to compete for the office of Municipal Mayor of Guatemala City.
He has collaborated in several programs that help to local communities, specially those of the rural, poor and vulnerable areas of Guatemala; sending the assistance to the victims of Hurricane Mitch (1998), with the coordination with the International Community. Also, he participated in the assistance of the victims by the drought in the communities of Camotan, Jocotan, and Chiquimula (2001). In the role of Foreign Minister, he organized different activities to support the victims of Hurricane Stan (2005).
