Mohammed Burhan Abed Al-Bakri was born in Hebron, in the southern West Bank, in 1959. He is married and has four children. He studied primary school in Hebron, and preparatory and secondary school in Syria. He graduated from the Police Officers Training College in Tunisia in 1979. He was appointed Director of the Office of the Head of the Organization and Administration Authority for Military Affairs of the Palestine Liberation Organization, then served as Political Commissioner in Political Guidance for the southern West Bank between 2003 and 2009. He retired in 2009 with the rank of Major General.
He joined the ranks of the Fatah movement in the Yarmouk camp in Syria in 1975, participated in the Lebanese Civil War as a fighter in the Palestinian revolution, and became a member of the Hebron Regional Committee of the Fatah movement in 1997. He also served as Secretary of the University Student Movement Authority for universities in the Hebron Governorate and the southern West Bank. Al-Bakri was active in sports, serving on the Executive Committee of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, and was appointed Vice President of the Palestinian Olympic Committee in 2007 and President of the Palestinian Karate Federation in 2017.
Al-Bakri believes that Israel lives amidst an environment of Arabs and Muslims who support the Palestinian cause, and historical inevitability dictates that the life and security of the Israelis cannot continue unless the Palestinian people are able to achieve stability and establish their independent state. Without this, the state of hostility will remain, and this is not in the interest of the Israelis, especially since the Palestinian people will not stop the struggle before their national rights are achieved. Al-Bakri predicts that the Israeli right-wing policy is dragging Israeli society to destruction, and that right-wing Zionist thought will be a major factor in undermining its foundations and pillars in various aspects.
Al-Bakri supported the Oslo Accords, viewing them as a significant shift for the Palestinians at the time. He believes that, like any agreement in the world, it was between two parties, each convinced of its own interests. However, he argues that had the agreement been properly upheld and maintained by both Palestinians and Israelis, it would have produced a different outcome. He believes the Palestinians have suffered because the occupation has torn up the agreement under numerous flimsy pretexts and is no longer bound by it. He maintains that the Palestinian division has a devastating impact on the Palestinian cause, and history will condemn all those responsible for prolonging it. He believes the division is managed by individuals who benefit from its continuation, and these individuals are more dangerous than the enemies of the Palestinian people. He asserts that ending the division falls on the shoulders of the national elite, and the Palestinian people should not wait for any party to make arrangements that suit their interests. Instead, they should work directly to end the division through a set of elements that constitute an easy and secure mechanism, in accordance with the agreements reached between the factions.
It is believed that the story of armed and peaceful resistance is a lie perpetrated on the Palestinian people, as the people want their rights, and each stage has its own form, role, tools, and method of operation. The right of the Palestinian people to be like the rest of the world’s peoples, to have their independence, freedom, and state, and to carry out the process of building within society, to create good citizens who perform their duties and know their rights, is a form of resistance.
Al-Bakri believes that the factors of unity among the people of one nation exist, and the people are the key to correcting and advancing. He stipulates that to bring about change for the better, there must be mutual trust between the leader and the citizen. The people have a rich experience, but they are not currently prepared to react in a way that matches their aspirations because the political leadership in the various forces and parties is not honest in the true sense, and some of them are conducting their relationship with the citizen as if they were in an election market looking for a vote.
