(Mohammed Kamal) Ibrahim Mohammed Hassouneh was born in Hebron on March 21, 1942. He is married and has five children. He received his primary and secondary education in Hebron schools, completing his secondary education in 1963. He earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from the Faculty of Law at Cairo University in 1969. He practiced law for two years, then moved into free trade. He established the first factory in Palestine for the manufacture of metal fibers, and founded another factory for the manufacture of metal wire in 1973. He contributed with others to the establishment of the Islamic Takaful Company and the Al-Safa Islamic Bank. He is the founder of the Palestinian Oils Company “Petropal”. He held responsibility for three ministries: the Ministry of National Economy, the Ministry of Public Works, and the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, remaining in this position between 2007 and 2009.
Hassouneh was deeply involved in institutional service work. He was a member of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society in Hebron in the 1970s, treasurer of the Association of University Graduates, president of the Family Planning Association, and president of the Housing Association in Hebron. He was a founding member of the Ramallah and Jerusalem Businessmen Association and the Palestinian Federation of Industries. He also headed the Federation of Metal and Engineering Industries in Palestine, served on the Board of Trustees of the Palestinian Economic Policy Research Institute (MAS), the Board of Trustees of Bethlehem University, and the Board of Trustees of An-Najah National University, and chaired the Board of Directors of the Palestinian Development Fund. In 2017, he was elected to the Palestinian Legislative Council as part of the Independent Palestine Bloc, filling the seat vacated by MP Rawya Shawa, who passed away that year.
During his youth, Hassoun was summoned by Israeli intelligence, banned from traveling for two years, participated in several political workshops, presented papers in the political economy field, and participated in conferences outside of Palestine.
Hassouna believes that the Palestinian issue cannot be resolved in a short time, and that Palestinians must remain steadfast on this land and create a generation that is raised on religion, science, culture, and technology. He believes that the Oslo Accords came at a time when the occupation was the stronger party, and he considers that the division is due to the policies of the occupation and the United States, which contributed to increasing the gap between the Fatah and Hamas movements, in addition to the mistakes made by the Fatah movement and its great difference with the Hamas movement. He believes that the only winner from this situation is the occupation.
Hassouna believes that the Palestinian people have the right to use all means to get rid of the occupation, including armed resistance. This land is the right of the Palestinian people, and they must sacrifice everything to regain it and achieve independence. He believes it is necessary to involve all Palestinian factions in the Palestine Liberation Organization and its institutions, on the basis of the common goal and mutual respect, especially since we have recently witnessed achievements in favor of the cause through the United Nations with the recognition of the State of Palestine and the raising of the Palestinian flag at the United Nations.
