Yesterday you were among us, a smile gracing your cheeks, a smile uniquely yours. And yesterday, your pure body was laid to rest amidst a throng of mourners who came to bid you farewell to your final abode. My pen falters, unsure of what to write in your absence, Abu Imad. Our ancestors told us of you, years ago, saying: "Whenever we felt pain, we would travel to Nablus. The only doctor we knew there was Dr. Zahi Qamhawi. Surprisingly, the moment we entered his clinic, we felt as if our pain had been cured." It seems that when you named your firstborn son Imad, you were expressing your own stature as a pillar of medicine in Nablus, a city that now mourns your loss. I've known you for a long time, but I had the honor of getting to know you closely for over ten years, as you were my family doctor until the very end of your life. And I say this truthfully:

not once did I or any member of my family receive treatment at your clinic without being cured by your hand. You were a doctor for all ailments. When I used to enter your clinic, which I feel is as sad as I am at your departure, you would appear calm at first, but a smile would soon grace your lips, and our conversations would be pleasant and lengthy, covering a wide range of topics. I remember once saying to him, "Some patients say you're quick at diagnosing their illnesses. What's the secret?" He smiled and said, "Listen, my diagnosis relies on three factors. The first begins with my initial glance at the patient upon their arrival at my clinic. The second is after listening to the patient, and then when my stethoscope touches the source of the pain.

" I once asked him, surprised, about the secret to his youthful spirit and vigor. "What's the secret, Doctor?" He smiled and said to me, "Do you know I've been in my seventies for a while now? It's all thanks to vegetables, fruits, and exercise. Yes, the Nablus municipal stadium and swimming pool are proof of that." I believe in the inevitability of death, but what happened, Abu Imad? Where did this accursed disease come from? It seems that vegetables and fruits played a role in this merciless illness that afflicts its hosts.

It seems that some people have lost their consciences when they treat those vegetables with chemicals, heedless of human life. Yes, a doctor who treats others while he himself is ill. Children, adults, and the elderly loved you. My children often asked me about your disappearance, and that was also on the day I laid your smile to rest. I told them: You are traveling, but perhaps your journey will be long this time.

It is not like those short trips you used to make to visit your children abroad to check on them. I don't know what prompted me to take some pictures of you before you left for treatment abroad, and how much I grieved when I learned of your illness. I don't know what the remaining grandparents will say about your departure.

I am certain that your departure will leave a great void, and neither the old nor the young will forget you, nor will the hospitals and your fellow doctors forget you. How much I grieved when I saw the tears filling the eyes of your children when I laid your pure body to rest. We will continue to pray for mercy for you, as many times as your hands wrote the letters on the prescriptions, as much as you gladdened the hearts of the sick with healing, and as much as the security we felt through your smile, which death will not erase from our memories. From me and my family, a thousand mercies upon you, O Sheikh of Doctors and their Dean.
