During my visit to the Swedish city of Malmö, I met, along with my dear brother Dr. Muhammad Al-Ghazali, Chairman of the Palestinian Doctors Association in Sweden, the ambitious Palestinian student Basma Estitiyeh and her family, who is the winner of the largest Swedish scientific competition for young researchers in the field of science, technology and mathematics.
During the preparations for the activities of the 20th Return Conference, 17-year-old Yasma - originally from Tal Al-Zaatar camp - presented to a crowd of participants the details of her award-winning project. She explained that it was about developing a mathematical model that explains how the protein interleukin 6 interacts with triple-negative breast cancer cells. “triple-negative breast cancer”, TNBC, provided that the model is able to predict the growth of cancer cells and thus prove the effectiveness of therapeutic drugs to combat it by detecting the extent of tumor shrinkage in proportion to measuring the concentration of interleukin 6 in the blood.
With this victory, Yasma has qualified to participate in the final qualifiers of the largest international competition for the younger generation in the field of natural sciences, which will be held this year in Dallas, USA, in which she will be a representative of Sweden.
Regarding her dream and future aspirations, Yasma explained that she hopes to continue her research that seeks to link biology with mathematics and to culminate in obtaining the Nobel Prize for Science and Research.
We congratulate Lesma, her parents, and her grandmother on this great achievement, and we wish her more success and creativity until her dream comes true.
