Muhammad Nimr Al-Khatib (1918-2010) is a Palestinian Muslim scholar, leader in the Muslim Brotherhood, and was a supporter of the Mufti of Palestine, Haj Amin Al-Husseini (Chairman of the Arab Higher Committee) during the Arab-Jewish conflict in Palestine during the British Mandate period and the first Arab-Israeli war, and worked in 1941 A.D. Al-Khatib is considered the first to write a book on the Palestinian cause, and he called it “From the Effect of the Nakba,” in which he talked about the events of the 1948 war in Palestine. The al-Khatib family held the reins of the fatwa and the supervision syndicate in Haifa during the time of Ottoman rule until the fall of Haifa.

 

On February 19, 1948, the Haganah targeted Al-Khatib, and attempted to assassinate him as part of what they called Operation Zarzeer, where two of the organization fired 32 bullets at a taxi in which Al-Khatib was traveling north of Haifa, while he was returning from Damascus loaded with weapons, and he was hit with one of the bullets in his lung. And three in his left shoulder, which led to his stay outside Palestine throughout the war period, and that attack resulted in the death of one of the passengers and the wounding of another.

Muhammad Nimr Al-Khatib was born in the city of Haifa in 1918 AD, and completed his primary and secondary studies, after which he went to Acre, where he studied at the Ahmadi Scientific Institute, where he learned from the senior scholars of the institute, including: Sheikh Abdullah Al-Jazzar (Mufti of Acre), and the director of the institute, Sheikh Muhammad Al-Lababidi, and Mufti Shafi’i Sheikh Mahmoud al-Qiblawi and others, then he traveled to Egypt to complete his studies at Al-Azhar, where he studied various textual and intellectual sciences, where he stayed for seven years in Al-Azhar, and obtained an international certificate signed by his Sheikh Muhammad Habib Allah Al-Shanqeeti and Sheikh Muhammad Al-Salmuti. Al-Khatib chose the Faculty of Fundamentals of Religion at Al-Azhar, where he continued his studies for four years, after which he obtained a high degree, then returned to his home city of Haifa, after registering his name in the master’s department.

 

In the year 1938 A.D., the revolution of the Arab people took place in Palestine after the martyrdom of Sheikh Izz al-Din al-Qassam. Al-Khatib worked to lead the revolution against the British occupation and the Zionist invasion, so he was arrested in Haifa, then released. When he was appointed as a teacher at the Al-Burj Institute in Acre, he was arrested again and then released. In 1939, he fought other battles and was wounded in them.

 

In 1948, he was shot and transferred to Al-Makassed Hospital in Beirut, then to Damascus to complete his treatment. After that, he became a member of the Refugee Foundation in Syria and the Syrian delegation to the Islamic Conference in Karachi. During his life outside Palestine, Al-Khatib persevered in exposing the dangers of Zionism and colonial conspiracies.

 

Al-Khatib taught Islamic sciences at the College of Sharia and Arts in Baghdad, and also worked at the Institute of Higher Studies and Research in Tunis, and worked at the Islamic University in Libya.

his death

Al-Khatib died in Medina on the day of Arafah, corresponding to November 15, 2010, when he was nearly 100 years old.
