Sheikh Abbas al-Khamash was born in Nablus and studied there, as well as at Al-Azhar University. During his studies, he met Jamal al-Din al-Afghani and Imam Muhammad Abduh, and was greatly influenced by them and their reformist call. A close relationship developed between Sheikh Abbas al-Khamash and Imam Muhammad Abduh, who stayed at his home in Nablus for more than a month on his way to Beirut after being expelled from Egypt for his participation in the Urabi Revolt of 1882. Upon his return to Nablus, the Sheikh took up teaching and preaching in its mosques. He was appointed a Sharia judge in Nablus in 1870 and again in 1892, serving in the same position for three years. He founded a social group called "The Society," which had members and supporters in Nablus, Tulkarm, and Jenin.

He then traveled to Istanbul, where he was received by the Sheikh al-Islam and appointed a Sharia judge in Homs. Sheikh Abbas Al-Khamash was a writer whose contributions were mostly published in the magazine (Al-Jinan) owned by Butrus Al-Bustani. The owner of the magazine used to introduce the Sheikh's articles by saying: "From the pen of His Eminence, one of the nobles and scholars of Nablus, Mr. Abbas Al-Khamash Zadeh." He died in Homs.
